According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), nearly 70% of the nation’s grid is more than 25 years old. Solar flares are intense bursts of radiation from the sun’s surface, caused by the release of magnetic energy stored in the solar atmosphere. These phenomena can have destructive effects similar to Electromagnetic Pulses (EMPs) but occur naturally. When solar flares are directed towards Earth, they can cause geomagnetic storms, which are disturbances in Earth’s magnetosphere. These storms are triggered by the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emitted by the sun, interacting with Earth’s magnetic field.
